Memo: Military Capabilities Report in Response to Pandemic

As you may know, we have quite a few groups of defense. There are the five-nation Eurocorps who are comprised of approximately 1,000 soldiers stationed in Strasbourg and up to 60,000 troops pledged for deployment in the EU. There are thirteen 1,500-man battle groups that respond to international crises on a rotating basis in which 22/27 member states supply the troops. Last but not least, there is the support of the armed forces of each of the member states. Synchronized Armed Forces Europe (SAFE) was voted Yes by the European Parliament but the task force has still not gone into effect. Nonetheless, we have 94,000 soldiers plus the armed forces of each of the member states. The total of active military is about 2 million.

If there were to be a global pandemic, besides mapping out how many people are in the military, it would be wise to know how many people are on the land, in the air, and in the water. There are more than 40,000 employed on land, about 15,000 in the air, and about 1,700 in the water. These numbers include the equipment and the people working the equipment.

In the case of a crises, the most significant role of the military would be CONTROL. We would control the movement of people and help make sure that everyone acts in a civilized, calm manner. The borders of the EU member states would be protected to ensure that infected or not infected people don’t enter. While the European Union will protect itself from other countries, the member states that make up the union will also protect themselves. If the outbreak were to start in one of the member states, it would be controlled and kept in that one member state.

The EU police and military forces would unite as well to achieve the goal of maintaining order.

Military doctors and specialists would be provided for the people that need help. Also, military facilities would be open to house affected people in order to contain the pandemic.
